My Detox Days
If you follow my blog at all, you know from a post last week that I planned on doing the 3 Day Refresh cleanse after the month long eating-and-drinking-whatever-I-wanted-binge. Listen. May was fun. I traveled. I celebrated. I hung out with friends by the pool, at the sandbar at the bar bar. It. Was. A. Blast. But my body paid for it.
I work really hard to keep my fitness in check, so imagine my surprise that after a month of fun, I had gained about 5 lbs! Ugh. And on top of that... I felt like crap. I was tired, irritable, BLOATED, and had ZERO motivation.
I was scrolling through Pinterest one day and I found a list of reasons why you might need a detox. Number 2 on that list? Mental fogginess. What?! How did they know that is what I was feeling. Number 1? Bloat. Yep... out of the 10, I think I had 9 "symptoms" of toxin overload.
Yikes.
Toxin. Overload.
Sounds really bad. So, in walks the 3 Day Refresh. I am going to go over in detail my entire experience with you and at the end share my results! I am really excited about this!! Sit back, relax and enjoy my story :)
DAY ONE
I am really excited to do this... well I keep telling myself that. It's only three days. Plus I have a great group of women doing this with me... seven of us in a group together. We got this. I got this.
I take my starting weight and measurements. Ugh.
Starting weight: 156.4
Waist: 31"
Hips: 38.5"
Geez!!! It's like I took a huge step back with all that fun. At least I am committed to doing this. Here goes nothing. The first thing I notice, after reading the guide, is that I cannot have coffee during these three days. (!!!!) Um. Ok. I warn all my closest friends and family. The next three days are going to be touch and go without my coffee fix. I get up, have my recommended 10 oz of water to "get my system going." Sounds like fun already. An hour later I have my vegan chocolate Shakeology blended with water, ice and half of a banana. Well I love that! Next!
Next. Hmmm. Not really sure how to describe it. The Fiber Sweep. I'm going to be honest here. It looks like dirty dirty dirty river water, complete with sediment. It tastes good... kind of a subtle citrus flavor... followed by a hairball feeling in my mouth. It is recommended that it is drank right away and quickly so that it doesn't have time to THICKEN. Ew. Oh my. I don't know if I could drink it any thicker. (One of the women in my group took a phone call in the middle of hers and had to drink sludge... um no thanks! Impressed that she still drank it!!) Down the hatch it goes in 15 seconds flat.
Ok that wasn't so bad. I am feeling pretty good about my decision so far. Some green tea about an hour later rounds out my morning. Lunch is a Vanilla Fresh shake, one serving of vegetables, one serving of fruit and one serving of healthy fat. The shake was delicious. Tasted just like I thought it would... like a vanilla protein shake. I made mine with 10 oz of water, shaken in a shaker cup. For my food choices: watermelon, carrots and hummus. A couple hours go by and its time for a snack! Yay! I love snack time!! Almond butter and celery was my choice on day one.
Now here is where it gets tricky. I love food. So when I made the Moroccan Carrot Salad from the recipe book for dinner I was super nervous about it not being enough. It literally made about 3/4 cup of carrot/spice mixture. But I got to have another Vanilla Fresh with 20g of protein so to be honest... even though it was torture to prepare and serve my family turkey meatloaf and broccoli for dinner, I felt good. I wasn't hungry at all.
After dinner was movie night. Ugh... my family wants popcorn. POPCORN!? Its like my kryponite. Like for real. But I make it. Put the bowl FARRRRR away from myself. And ignore it while we watched Maleficent (which was great by the way.) I go to bed super proud of myself for getting through day one. No weird (ahem) side effects... you know what I'm talking about... and no caffeine withdrawal headache.. yet. One down, two to go.
DAY TWO
I decide to sleep in today so I don't feel sad about missing my morning coffee. Yesterday was good, but I don't want to give myself EXTRA time to miss it. So I get up and have my water, breakfast was the same as yesterday (Shakeology + 1/2 banana), followed by the Allegheny River water (yinz guys know what I'm talking 'bout), more green tea and lots of water in between. I decide to get a workout in today. Light workouts are recommended during the Refresh so I do a 35 minute PiYo workout (and try out Shaun T's new Cize program on my Beachbody OnDemand... I made a video... it's hilarious, just ask and I will send you in the right direction to see me acting a fool)
For lunch on Day Two, cucumbers, 1/2 of an apple and almond butter plus the Vanilla Fresh shake. Everything is going GREAT! Until. After my tiny afternoon snack (close your ears... but like 6 slices of f*cking cucumber?!) I am starting to second guess myself. Whyyyyyyy am I doing this?! I want coffee. I want food. I want POPCORN!!
To be honest. I think this day is the hardest MENTALLY. I still, physically, feel GREAT and I think that is the only thing that is keeping me going. But my mind is getting the best of me. So I check in with my little group... and you know what? I see that they are doing it... they are getting it done, so I will too. Carry on. It was just a moment of weakness. I do some personal development reading with the book "You Are A Badass" and I tell myself that I can do this. Our minds are definitely a strong force when it comes to will power, health and fitness. I am not going to let my mind RUIN this for me.
I make an amazing veggie stir fry for dinner along with a Vanilla Fresh shake... my family actually got the same stir fry, except I added chicken and quinoa for them. Day two is in 'da BOOKS! One more day! I got this. The only thing I noticed today is a SLIGHT headache. Like a dull ache in the background. Nothing I can't handle though. I feel even lighter than yesterday and my mental clarity is coming through!! Yay for no more "fog head."
DAY THREE
DAY THREE!!!!!!!
I am in the final stretch. It probably doesn't help that I didn't leave the house AT ALL during the 3 Day Refresh... well except for on Day 2 when I sat out on my driveway while my lovely neighbor made her grocery list and talked about FOOD. I love her dearly... but I wanted to harm her. Just kidding! Love you girl!
I kind of wish I had left my house at some point. It would have kept my mind off the food all around me... but WOW did that test my will power. Today, I am going to get out. Except...... little one has a fever. Ugh. Home bound for the day. Well.... I got this anyhow. I have gotten through two days already. I am strong. I am smart. I. Got. This. I do another PiYo workout today and am feeling pretty strong! Lots of detoxing sweat... if you have ever cleansed or detoxed, you know that your sweat has a... distinct smell. My body was definitely ridding of every last toxin today!!
Breakfast was the same as it was for the past two days. Same with the dirty Fiber Sweep -- My best advice for that is to CHUG IT. Lunch was carrots, hummus, grapes and Vanilla Fresh. I am on a roll now. I can see the finish line!
For Day Three's snack, almond butter and celery and the kids even wanted some too!
DINNER! Last meal of my Refresh!!!! I can almost smell the coffee... cause I am not going to lie... I miss my coffee. Dinner is the largest meal I have eaten in the past 3 days. Giant spinach salad with lemon juice and EVOO dressing with a cup of vegetable broth and my last Vanilla Fresh. And..... an EMPTY BOX!!! Don't get me wrong... in hindsight.. I actually ENJOYED this detox but it was exciting to see that empty box. By this evening, I FEEL amazing. I feel lighter... I feel healthy... I feel strong... I feel like the fog that was clouding my head has FINALLY lifted! I am looking forward to that morning coffee though!
