Action Before Emotion

Stay with me for a second on this one.

Motivation is definitely the number one excuse I hear when it comes to making healthy changes.... changes like exercising daily, eating healthier, drinking less soda, quitting smoking, etc etc.  The list could literally go on forever.  But for the sake of what I want to try and accomplish here, lets stay with the motivation to get fit.

Sounds good right?  Being fit... getting fit.... you want that right?  But you cannot find your motivation.... because, well, it is HARD.  Starting and keeping and maintaining that habit to live a healthy and fit lifestyle IS hard.

Usually people wait for the "right time" or in this case, the right "emotion".  We need, as humans, to FEEL something before pushing play on that workout.  You need to FEEL that emotion don't you?  You need to feel that MOTIVATION.  Everything in life is like this... you have to FEEL something before you get up and do it.

But, I'm telling you to STOP right now.  Don't wait for that emotion.  Decide right now, and take the action before you feel something.  Press play.  Get your workout in.  And I PROMISE you will FEEL something afterwards. 

What kinds of feelings will you feel you ask???

How about:

1. PRIDE
2. HAPPINESS
3. SATISFACTION
4. SELF-RESPECT
5. SELF-CONFIDENCE
6. ELATION
7. EXHAUSTION (in a good way)
8. ACHIEVEMENT
9. FULFILLMENT
10. ENJOYMENT ----> wellllllll maybe lol

The list could go on and on and on! 

Imagine if you FELT any one of these emotions prior to getting up and getting a workout in.  You would NAIL it.  This is why I am telling you that in order to start this habit, you need to set emotion aside and just TAKE ACTION.

The action will lead to these emotions, I promise.

And you do this day in and day out until you get to the point where these emotions and thoughts of a workout are one in the same. 

That is the sweet spot my friends.  That is the pivotal moment.

I have been asked numerous times.... "Joslin, how long was it until you actually enjoyed or wanted to work out?  When did it become easy for you?"

Well, it still isn't EASY, per se... but it is something I crave now.  I know without a doubt that exercising will make me feel all of those emotions above, and then some.  So I don't wait for the feelings to come to give me the motivation I need.  No. 

I just take action.

That is my advice for you if you are struggling to find the right moment, the right time, the right feeling.... just take action.  There is a reason why Nike hasn't changed their slogan in decades.  Just do it.  They know whats up!

Find you sweet spot.  Find you emotions, AFTER the fact and it will propel you to want to do it again and again.... and before you know it, you won't be grasping for that motivation. And if you ever do, come back to this post and retrain your brain.

Now, all of that being said, I need to remind myself of this coming off of Super Bowl weekend!
